ACHIEVEMENT BENCHMARKS
Children need to know that you believe education is hugely important and that you want them to do well in school. High expectations set the stage for academic success. But as I was taught in law school, that’s necessary but not sufficient. Or as President Ronald Reagan put it even more bluntly in negotiating nuclear missile treaties with the former Soviet Union: “Trust, but verify.”
In other words, when it comes to education, high expectations should be coupled with heavy-duty vigilance. Parents should monitor closely whether their kids are mastering the necessary skills and meeting the standards at each age level for what they must know and be able to do. Report cards and feedback from teachers give you some feel for how they’re doing. But don’t be content with that information. Many school districts have prepared specific academic benchmarks grade by grade which you can use to double-check on your child’s progress and quiz the teachers if your child appears to be falling behind.
To cite just one example of these benchmarks, the Board of Education of the City of New York publishes pamphlets for parents that outline the scholastic guidelines pupils should meet from kindergarten through eighth grade. The guidelines cover language arts, math, science, and social studies. Here’s a sample of what the school system expects pupils to know and be able to do grade by grade:
